The items
  We shall continue with a set of statements. Individuals who had previously shared their experiences with us made these statements. Please indicate for each of the 11 statements, the extent to which they apply to your situation, the way you feel now. Please, circle the appropriate answer.
1 There is always someone I can talk to about my day-to-day problems Er is altijd wel iemand in mijn omgeving bij wie ik met mijn dagelijkse probleempjes terecht kan
2 I miss having a really close friend Ik mis een echt goede vriend of vriendin

4 There are plenty of people I can lean on when I have problems Er zijn genoeg mensen op wie ik in geval van narigheid kan terugvallen
5 I miss the pleasure of the company of others Ik mis gezelligheid om me heen
6 I find my circle of friends and acquaintances too limited Ik vind mijn kring van kennissen te beperkt
7 There are many people I can trust completely Ik heb veel mensen op wie ik volledig kan vertrouwen
8 There are enough people I feel close to Er zijn voldoende mensen met wie ik me nauw verbonden voel
9 I miss having people around Ik mis mensen om me heen
10 I often feel rejected Vaak voel ik me in de steek gelaten
11 I can call on my friends whenever I need them Wanneer ik daar behoefte aan heb kan ik altijd bij mijn vrienden terecht
Possible answers are "yes", "more or less", "no" ("ja", "min-of-meer", "nee").

Frequency of the item scores
Note: At wave b, for 173 respondents the item scores were collected by means of a paper and pencil questionnaire (see variable blo_mode in LASAb073). For the other 2879 respondents at wave b and all respondents at the other waves, the scores were collected by means of a computerized questionnaire.
The item scores are stored in the files LSNa073, LASAb073, LASAc073, LASAd073.

Scale score
De score is computed according to the manual of the scale (De Jong Gierveld & Van Tilburg, 1999).
Computation of the scale score from the item scores (example for wave a):
count alo = alo1 alo4 alo7 alo8 alo11 (1,2) alo2 alo3 alo5 alo6 alo9 alo10 (2,3).
count mis = alo1 to alo11 (lo thru -1).
if (mis>1) alo = -1.
missing values alo (-1).

Frequency of the scale score at the various observations
The scale scores are stored in the files LSNa273, LASAb273, LASAc273, LASAd273.

Distribution of Loneliness Scale scores
(1992; wave a; N = 4045; indepently living respondents only; cases weighted in such a way that the sample meets the national distribition according to sex, age and marital status)

Mean = 2.12; SD = 2.59; Skewness = 1.43; Kurtosis = 1.54

Developments in loneliness
(based on respondents with four observations; N = 1722)

Single, direct questions
In addition to the items, at wave a (LSN, 1992) two single, direct questions on loneliness were asked.

If we divide people in: the not lonely, the moderately lonely, the severely lonely, and the extremely lonely, what would you consider yourself to be?

Correlations with Depressive symptoms
The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) includes an item (item number 14; e.g. variable bcesd14 in LASAb025) on loneliness: "During the past week I felt lonely" ("De afgelopen week voelde ik me eenzaam"), with answering possibilities (1) "rarely or never", (2) "sometimes", (3) "occasionally" and (4) "mostly or always". The Pearson correlations of the Loneliness Scale and the CES-D item 14 and scale scores are:
